MUMBAI: The 4,700-plus government employees who have been living in service quarters at a Bandra (East) government colony will be provided with ownership flats in the same colony. A decision to this effect has been taken by chief minister Eknath Shinde, said Kiran Pawaskar, spokesperson, Shiv Sena.

On Wednesday, Shinde had presided over a meeting to discuss the redevelopment of the government colony. At the meeting, Shinde had directed officials to ascertain the development potential of the slum area and submit a detailed redevelopment plan.

Pawaskar said the colony is spread over 90 acres and houses 4,782 class I, II, III and IV employees. “Around 10 acres will be utilised for a slum rehabilitation scheme. The government will rehabilitate the slum dwellers and provide ownership flats to 3,800 employees belonging to class II and III category in the sale component. Twelve buildings are currently under redevelopment. Approximately 1,800 class IV employees will be given ownership flats in the other redeveloped buildings,” said Pawaskar. Around 30 acres is to be given for a complex for the Bombay high court. A redeveloped building will be for Savitribai Phule Government Hostel for women.

Asked about the impact of the decision on service quarters and similar demands by other government officers, Pawaskar said the redevelopment will give three times more flats and the ownership flats are only being given to families of those government officials living here for two generations. Earlier, the state had promised 500-square-foot flats to police personnel’s families living for generations in BDD chawls.

Salil Rameshchandra, president, Federation of Grantees of Government Land, said, “Housing is a big issue in Mumbai and to give quarters on ownership basis is wrong.”
