KOLKATA: The KMC will launch a city-wide drive to demolish dilapidated houses, listed as “extremely vulnerable”.

“We have identified around 150 buildings that pose a threat to residents and pedestrians. Of them, we are particularly focusing on 50 houses, portions of which need to be pulled down immediately,” said a buildings department official.

He added they would take help of an express order — which the municipal commissioner can issue under Section 411 (4) of KMC Buildings Rule — that empowered the KMC to raze any insecure part of a dilapidated building that is beyond repairs.

The decision comes after one person died and several were buried under the rubble as a portion of a floor of a five-storey house on Pathuriaghata Street collapsed late on Wednesday. The KMC had reportedly failed to convince the 51 tenants to vacate the unsafe structure and had also sent notices to the owner for repairs but to no avail.

Most of the highly dilapidated buildings are in Cossipore, Burtolla, Burrabazar, Rabindra Sarani, Pathuriaghata, Beadon Street, CR Avenue, College Street, Amherst Street, Ripon Street, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, Park Circus, Topsia, Ballygunge, Bhowanipore, Kidderpore and Tollygunge. “We must evacuate several of the insecure houses or accidents may occur during monsoon,” said an official. A list will be shared with borough executive engineers to keep an eye on those.

Owners can avail of a civic scheme of extra Floor Area Ratio (FAR) to rebuild their old houses to be able to accommodate all the tenants. “We urge the owners to accept the scheme so that the tenants are saved,” an official said.
