LUCKNOW: In the first quarter of the 2023-24 financial year, labour department has collected a total of Rs 91.8 crore cess from around 337 commercial establishments in the district.

The funds will be used to extend various social security schemes to around 3.85 lakh workers registered with the labor welfare board, the department shared on Tuesday.

During the district-level Shram Bandhu meeting called by district magistrate Surya Pal Gangwar here on Tuesday, the labour department said the board will disburse these funds for eight social security schemes designed categorically to provide for their safety, health, and welfare measures and other incidental matters.

Taking stock of the situation, Gangwar stressed the need to carry out a detailed study of different areas and identify all eligible workers that have hitherto remained out of the ambit of the Labour Welfare Board.

“The department has been directed to set up dedicated camps at various ‘labour chowks’ and other sites and generate awareness around schemes meant for them. They can coordinate with various labor unions for maximum coverage and outreach,” said Gangwar.

Commenting on directions issued by the district administration, assistant labour commissioner Shipra Chaturvedi said the department was conducting a detailed study of various labor chowks.

“The ground-level study is not only meant to increase the coverage of the scheme but also to collect wholesome data on the entire profile of the workers. This would help us identify areas where workers need assistance from the board,” she said.
