PANCHKULA: The municipal corporation (MC) is all set to install energy-efficient streetlights and centralised control and monitoring system (CCMS) panels for smart lighting systems in Panchkula.

The directorate of urban local bodies has approved replacement of existing conventional streetlights at a cost of Rs 9.9 crore, said mayor Kulbhushan Goyal on Friday.

Administrative and financial approval of Rs 9.9 crore has been granted for technical clearance and budget allocation under the Divya Nagar scheme and installation of command and control center for IT infrastructure to monitor smart lighting systems.

Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal said that approval was granted for conversion of all streetlights in the city to LEDs. The proposal was sent to urban local bodies department (ULB) for technical approval and it has been approved. The mayor said that half the expense of conversion of streetlights into LEDs would be borne by the urban local bodies department.

The state government has already selected a company to purchase the LEDs. Earlier, EESL had to install LED streetlights in place of sodium and CFL lights in the MC area. Before installing streetlights, the agency surveyed street lighting and dark spots.

Based on this survey, a total of 18,500 LED lights are to be installed in Panchkula. However, the ULB stopped the corporation from installing LED lights at its level. ULB officials argued that the Haryana government plans to install LED streetlights in the entire state.
