CHANDIGARH: With an aim to shift the marble market to Sector 56 W, the UT administration will be developing the bulk material market at Rs 16 crore.

The marble market currently operates from Dhanas and Sarangpur on agricultural land against stipulated laws. A case on the issue is also pending in the Punjab and Haryana high court.

CB Ojha, UT chief engineer, said, “We will be developing roads, parking, sewage system, drinking water, streetlights and other amenities on around 50-acre land in Sector 56W (near Max Hospital, Mohali) so that the marble market can be shifted to the location. The decision was taken to shift the market at the level of UT administrator and the engineering department was given the task of developing the infrastructure in the area. On Thursday, the department floated the tender for the work.”

The infrastructural development work is slated to start in a month’s time, after the end of monsoon. It will take another eight to nine months for the work to completed after the work contract is allotted.

The engineering department has been given the approved layout plan and based on these the area will be developed. “The market will have all the requisite infrastructure, amenities and facilities. There will also be provision for green spaces in the area,” said Ojha.
