PUNE: An RTI query revealed that over 1,700 property owners in the city have outstanding dues of Rs1 crore each.

The collective recovery from these property owners is over Rs5,000 crore.

According to the data revealed under RTI, almost 94 property owners went to court against the dues, which amount to Rs 988 crore, of which Rs 565 crore is from two owners. In addition, tax from mobile towers amounts to Rs2,427 crore.

Members of Sajag Nagrik Manch, a citizens’ group that filed the query, demanded the Pune Municipal Corporation to expedite action against defaulting property owners.

“The administration appointed a music band to play songs in front of the properties with smaller dues pending but not focussing on bigger tax defaulters. The administration will earn around Rs1,800 crore by resolving half the pending cases,” Vivek Velankar of Sajag Nagrik Manch, said.

PMC officials claimed the administration undertook a special drive to seal properties belonging to big tax defaulters.

Civic officials said they would auction the defaulting properties as a last measure if the owners fail to pay the dues even after issuing notices and temporarily sealing the properties.

The civic body will take the property into possession and add its name to the 7/12 extract to auction it through an online bidding process.
