NOIDA: Low-height streetlight poles are being installed at many places in the city and residential sectors to address dark spots due to the dense growth of trees. The move aims to preserve the green spaces where, instead of pruning the trees, an alternative in low-height streetlight poles is sought.

As against the normal pole of 15 to 25 feet, now poles of 13 to 20 feet will be installed which are 2 to 5 feet lower. While the cost of these poles ranges from Rs 2000 to Rs 4000, the cost is about 30-35% less than the normal-size poles.

According to officials, while about 50-60 such poles are being replaced in every sector including 19, 47, 34, etc overall, 400 low-height poles will be replaced across the city even as a survey is underway for more areas. Apart from that, decorative poles and high mast lights are also being installed across residential sectors, shopping complexes, and entry points.

“We have got several feedback from residents that many streetlights in their sectors are covered with branches of trees which are not only tall but old and cannot be cut or pruned regularly. Besides, they are also a source of green cover for the city. Therefore we have decided to install low-height streetlight poles in such places where trees are dense so that there’s enough light on the road and footpaths,” Sanjay Kumar Khatri ACEO Noida Authority told TOI. Khatri adds that low height poles also come at a reduced cost of 30-35% from the normal-size poles.

Rajesh Kumar Singh deputy general manager (DGM) electrical and maintenance department of the Noida Authority told TOI that nearly 50-60 such poles are being replaced in residential sectors. “Further survey is underway, and more poles will be installed as per the survey requirement. So far over 300 poles are designated to be installed,” said Singh.

According to Singh, in the last one year, about 7500 street lights have been installed by the electrical/mechanical department in the villages and sectors of Noida, in which 5,361 street lights including 121 high masts have been installed at about 220 places which were identified by the police department and intimated to Noida Authority. “These were normal streetlights which were installed usually where there were dark spots and dim light areas like rural villages and some urban sectors. But now we have begun installing low-height streetlights in urban areas of the city which were left earlier and remained in the dark due to overgrown trees,” said Singh.Apart from that, decorative poles are also being installed at some places for beautification. Some of the places where these poles with lights are installed include the Brahmaputra Market and Ganga Shopping Complex in Sector 29, Sector 18, Kalindi Kunj entry point, Chaar Murti entry point, Film City flyover, Sectors 48, 46, 62, Shahdara entry point and in residential sectors including 34, 46, 47, 50, 14, Arun Vihar etc.
