NOIDA: The state govt has decided to set up a new sub-registrar’s office that will primarily cater to residents of Greater Noida West — but several kilometres away in Dadri. The new office is likely to function from next month.

Residents have raised questions over the govt’s decision, asking why they must travel all the way to Dadri to get their properties registered when a similar office could be set up closer home.

Gautam Budh Nagar has six sub-registrar offices — three in Noida, and one each in Dadri, Jewar and Greater Noida. Officials said the current office in Dadri was overwhelmed, registering nearly 60,000 documents annually.

With several housing projects coming up in Greater Noida West and the area witnessing a population influx, residents had for long demanded a separate sub-registrar’s office issuing documents for properties from the region.

On June 20, UP govt issued a notification, announcing that Dadri would get another sub-registrar’s office — ‘Dadri 2’ — catering to 26 sectors from Greater Noida West and 28 villages around it.

Among the sectors that will benefit from this new office are 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 15, 16B, 16C, 17, 20, Techzone 7, Ecotech 12-14, Knowledge Park 5 and Sports City.

Abhishek Kumar — president of the Noida Extension Flat Owners’ Welfare Association (NEFOWA) — sought to know the point of setting up a separate office for Greater Noida West when property owners had to travel to Dadri like earlier.

“Travelling to Dadri and back is a hassle because of poor connectivity. Not everybody owns a vehicle. So, people need to book cabs and spend a lot of money to go to the sub-registrar’s office. There are times when you don’t get cabs on your way back from Dadri. When the office is being set up for properties from Greater Noida West, why can’t it come up in the city itself,” he asked TOI.

Officials in the stamps and registration department linked the govt’s decision with a protest by lawyers in Dadri last year.

In April 2023, the govt came out with a notification to set up a separate office for Greater Noida West.

“Member of the Dadri Bar Association then organised a month-long protest, demanding that the office must come up in Dadri itself. The notification was cancelled because of some technical issue. Now, a fresh announcement has been made. We need space to operate the sub-registrar’s office. As of now, we have identified a govt building in Dadri and got the district administration’s permission to run the sub-registrar’s office from there,” said Shashi Bhanu Mishra, assistant inspector-general of stamps and registration.

Mishra said the department could also organise special registry camps in highrises if the number of properties to be registered was substantial.

Kumar argued that decisions of the govt should be for the welfare of the general public and not to facilitate the lawyers.
