KOCHI: Authorities of Tripunithura municipality have asked the Army Welfare Housing Organization (AWHO,) which constructed three apartment complexes at Silver Sand Island, Vyttila, to get a structural stability study of the buildings conducted by a competent agency.

Following a complaint that the buildings lack structural stability, the municipality officials conducted an inspection at Chander Kunj Army Towers last week.

There are 264 units in the apartment complexes. According to retired colonel Ciby Goerge, one of the flat owners, two of the three complexes in the island may collapse anytime. “It was in 2018 that the AWHO handed over the apartments to us. There were cracks on the structure even at that time. So, I moved the court which directed the municipal authorities to conduct an inspection,” George said.

“It was just a preliminary inspection,” an official with the municipality said.

At the same time, the AWHO is learnt to have conducted a study pertaining to the matter. “It was AWHO, Delhi, which constructed the buildings. Following the complaints, they conducted a detailed study which lasted for almost six months. The report was submitted to the Delhi office of the agency,” said retired major general Rajagopalan, president, Chander Kunju Army Towers Owners’ Association. “The AWHO has submitted a letter to the municipality stating that repair works will be carried out,” he said.
