NASHIK: The economic offences wing of the city police has taken over a probe from the Mumbai Naka police over a city builder allegedly conning a landowner.

The builder was arrested on October 30 and remanded to four days of custody.

The landowner registered a complaint at the Mumbai Naka police station. He said he had given land for development and also paid Rs1.2 crore to the builder in December 2019. However, the builder did not do the work and never returned the money.

The police registered an FIR against the builder under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will) and 468 (forgery for cheating) among other sections of the IPC.

The case was transferred to EOW. PI Bhagirath Deshmukh said that as people came to know about the arrest, close to 20 came ahead with similar problems. The builder and three others who have been booked could have cheated people to the tune of approximately Rs50 crore.
