NEW DELHI: Visual Light Communication leads to faster, economical and low power-consuming communication due to greater bandwidth and stronger immunity against interferences.

Radio Frequency (RF), the current model of communication is proving out to be less efficient in catering to the growing needs of wireless communication. Mobile network traffic is on its rise due to increment in the number of electronic devices.

Visual Light Communication (VLC) can play an important role in solving this problem. It is an advanced prototype of communication that can revolutionize the future. It modulates the visual light spectrum (400-700 nm) to transmit the information effectively. Research and analysis have shown the high potential of VLC to provide lightning fast communication with revamped energy efficiency and security.

VLC is expected to make significant inroads into wireless network applications across various domains, namely indoor wireless communication, effectual transportation and smart cities, safe and secure hospitals, artificial intelligence and warehouses, human sensing, innovative theme parks, vehicular communication and indoor point to point communication.

Experts suggest that accidents take place due to the ineptitude of drivers to do the right thing at the right time and slower response of vehicular technology. A total of 4.6L road accidents have been reported by States and Union Territories in the calendar year 2017. VLC could be a replacement of the existing technology as all the vehicles are equipped with powerful head and tail lights.

Hospitals could be made safer and more secure through VLC as it can play a vital role in intercepting the interference of radio waves with other machines. VLC also widens the opportunities for retailers to attain fruitful engagement with their consumers.

Proper connectivity and external networks are important for a fully functional indoor network.

One can easily connect various access points via separate cables but it is not cost-efficient as it requires installation, design, and labor. Light Fidelity (Li-fi) is a hybrid WiFi VLC that ensures affordable internet connectivity, inter-connectivity between the access points along with a secure, reliable and dense network.

It is essential that connectivity amongst the people, infrastructure, economy, government, and the environment needs to be flawless in order to make the cities smart. An effective three-layered VLC based communication infrastructure is proposed to amalgamate different technologies in smart cities’ applications.

Layer one promotes accessibility of events, layer two provides communications between the various LEDs and its sub gateways whereas the third one emphasizes on communication between the sub gateways and the service gateway with the use of optical communication.

While there are a variety of VLC applications, it is still globally unlicensed and at its stage of research. However, it is expected to be the solution to the existing problems.
