GHAZIABAD: Days after a portion of the wall at an under-construction Mahagun Millennia project in Crossings Republik collapsed, residents from nearby condominiums have submitted a police complaint against the developer expressing concern over a pit, nearly 50 feet deep, that has been dug up on the site to construct the basement of a mall.

Residents fear the pit, filled with water after recent rains, was leading to seepage and weakening the foundation of nearby buildings and their boundary walls.

On July 9, a portion of the service road of Gaur Global Village Society overlooking this pit on the mall site caved in, residents claimed. A second chunk of the road gave in on Monday. On July 6, following 90-minute showers in the NCR city, a portion of the wall of the under-construction mall had also collapsed.

“Due to continuous rainfall over the last few days, a portion of the soil below the boundary wall of our society has eroded. Damp patches have also developed on the walls of our society,” Sanjay Jha, a resident of Gaur Global in the township, said.

“It is very scary to see chunks of concrete give away every time it rains. The water in the pit dug for the mall’s basement can also affect the foundation of the towers in nearby societies. Who will be responsible in case of a mishap?,” another resident said.

The complaint submitted by the residents of Crossing Republik also claims the developer of Mahagun Millennia was constructing a mall on a 7,902 sqm plot, between two residential societies Gaur Global and Mahagun Mascot, for the past several months. They alleged that the plot did not have the GDA’s approval for any commercial project.

Currently, no new projects are allowed in the township.

In 2021, Sanjay Singh, a Crossings resident, had written to the principal secretary in Lucknow after Crossings Infrastructure Pvt Ltd (CIPL) allegedly failed to submit a detailed project report for all the common facilities of the township since 2006. Subsequently, a committee was formed that stopped any new projects in the township till the Crossings Infrastructure submitted the revised detailed project report for the common facilities.

Additional commissioner (Meerut division) Mahendra Pratap, who is currently investigating the case against CIPL, said GDA has recently submitted a revised DPR. “But as there were some issues in it, they have been told to resubmit the documents,” he said.

Meanwhile, on July 10, the GDA has also written to the police requesting that an FIR be filed against the developer of the Mahagun Millennia project and the CIPL for illegal construction.
